Modern Day Parables 34 – What Is Success? The Parable of the Dartboard

One hundred and eigh-ty!

When you look at a dartboard, you’ll notice that the highest score you can hit with a single dart is 60 (triple 20). Yet only a few millimeters away sits one of the lowest scores—a single 1. From a distance, my darts looked like they landed on the 60, but on closer inspection, I had actually hit an 11 and a 7. A far cry from the perfect 180.

Life can be just like that. From the outside, we might look like we’re scoring big—successful careers, nice homes, social approval—but up close, the numbers don’t always add up. And sometimes, the opposite is true: what looks small in the world’s eyes might actually be great success in God’s eyes.

Consider this—success isn’t only about hitting the “triple 20s” in life. Sometimes the so-called “low numbers” are true victories. Paying the bills on time is a blessing. Waiting in the car to pick up your child is a blessing. Having a job, a roof over your head, or even the ability to type on a phone that’s paid for—those are victories that testify to God’s provision.

Scripture reminds us:

1) “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)

2) “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” (Colossians 3:23) 3) “One who is faithful in very little is also faithful in much.” (Luke 16:10)

You may not be hitting triple 20s every day, but with each small, faithful step, you’re building a life that honors God. And the more you lean on Him, the more you’ll find yourself “aiming higher”—growing in faith, character, and love.

This week, don’t measure your success by the world’s dartboard. Instead, thank God for the “small wins” in your life. Write down three blessings you often overlook, and pray over them. Then ask the Lord to guide your aim toward His purpose, trusting that He will direct your steps (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Remember, you’re not throwing darts alone—God is with you, cheering you on.
