Today I did something unusual—I spelled my title in U.S. English. 😊 But as I sit and reflect on the meaning of Labor Day, I can’t help but think about the beauty of hard work and how blessed I am for where God has brought me.
The other day, my girlfriend and I were teasing each other about what we’d do if we won that $1.2 billion Mega Millions jackpot. Her answer was simple and beautiful: “I’d keep working.” That showed me her heart. My answer? I’d finish my doctorate and then keep working too. Why? Because work, when done with purpose, is a blessing, not a burden.
This isn’t just a nice thought—it’s a biblical truth. Proverbs 6:6 tells us:
“Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.” (ESV)
Other translations say “consider the ant” or “ponder her ways.” Either way, the lesson is the same: look at how the ant lives.
Ants work tirelessly. They work in unity. They have a shared vision and mission. And they don’t stop until the task is complete. Imagine if we approached our work, our calling, or even our church life the same way!
Think about it: someone’s life could be changed for the better simply because you showed up and gave your best. That kind of faithfulness doesn’t just impact you—it blesses everyone around you.
Your work matters. Whether you are leading a team, teaching a child, serving at church, or simply showing kindness to a stranger—what you do has eternal significance. God designed you not just to do a job but to make a difference.
Like the ant, your diligence may seem small, but when multiplied by God’s grace, it builds something bigger than you could ever imagine. The Kingdom advances when ordinary people do ordinary tasks with extraordinary faith.
So today, whatever your “work” looks like, do it with joy, do it with excellence, and most importantly—do it for the Lord. Someone’s breakthrough, blessing, or even salvation might come because you simply showed up.
